Grupo Alimentario Citrus (GAC), expert in the development of fresh and healthy products, has acquired the German company Thurländer, specialized in producing ready-to-eat salads, one of the key business areas for the Spanish group. With this operation, GAC advances, following its strategic plan for its growth in new markets, new customers and new channels.
“Germany is a market with great growth potential in the healthy food sector", explained Rafael Boix, the general manager of Grupo Alimentario Citrus (GAC), “this operation is an extraordinary milestone, for us, which makes us more competitive and reinforces our position as a company enabling us to carry on growing sustainably”.
Thurländer Salate und Feinkost GmbH was founded in 1999 and boasts a ready-to-eat salad processing plant in the German town, Thurland, in the Saxony-Anhalt region. It currently employs 300 people and in 2017 it reached a €45 million turnover (+5%). Following the operation, GAC will guarantee the workforce's stability and will carry on running production for the German, Danish and Austrian market, where Thurländer supplies the main retailers.
The company markets over 50 references and is the segment leader in bowl salads in Germany. At an operational level, the integration of the German company will bring GAC important growth as for innovation, efficiency and resources. Mr Boix highlighted: “Thurländer has a solid structure when it comes to both operations and distribution. We merge our experience to carry on offering our customers and consumers the best assortment of fresh, healthy, practical products of maximum quality, adapted to every market”.
Germany has always been a prime market for GAC, right from the start of its internationalization strategy in the year 2015 in the agricultural and children's nutrition business units. Now, the company sums new markets for the expansion of its fresh, ready-to-eat assortment.
A corporate group in constant growth
Since its creation in the year 2000, Grupo Alimentario Citrus (GAC) has maintained continuous, holding growth which brought about it becoming one of the main agri-food groups in Spain.
With the purchase of the German company Thurländer, GAC integrates a global workforce of 2.500 employees, with 7 production facilities and over 5.000 hectares of their own croplands. The group will close the year with a turnover of around €300 million euros and over 200 million units of ready-to-eat salads, sold in 5 countries - Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria and Denmark. GAC boasts an assortment of 200 references and its products reach over 30 customers in 20 different countries. In Spain, Mercadona is the company's main customer.
